First, I thought Utopia would be the haven of harmony and contentment. However, I was surprised by the certain aspects of Utopian society, such as the use of chains for criminals and the utilization of precious materials like gold for chamber pots. These highlighted the complexities and imperfections beneath the surface of Utopian ideals, leading me to question whether Utopia truly differed from dystopia.
The descriptions of ‘Utopia’ presented an interesting narrative. Utopia, the ideal society, is a concept that is rarely realized in the real world. Thomas More’s depiction of Utopian life showed a community characterized by peace and equality, where private property was nonexistent. It erased the lines between the wealthy and the poor, and where criminals became slaves.
I found some moments where my own human rights were respected. While my grandfather adhered to Buddhism, he never imposed his beliefs upon me, accepting and respecting my religious freedom. This gesture of tolerance and understanding filled me with gratitude and reinforced my belief in the importance of respecting individual choices and freedoms.
Furthermore, as I reached adulthood and gained the right to vote, I felt pride and responsibility. The ability to participate in the democratic process was a privilege I cherished deeply. It made me believe in the power of collective action to enact positive change.
In my opinion, the most crucial aspect of Utopia revolves around fostering respect and friendship among its inhabitants, as exemplified through various animated narratives. Take “Zootopia,” for instance, where Judy Hopps aspired to become a great police officer in the diverse city of Zootopia. Despite facing discrimination and obstacles in achieving her dream, she found solace and support in her unlikely friendship with Nick, a fox with a troubled past shaped by negative stereotypes.
Similarly, in “Elemental,” the main character Ember, composed of fire, faces limitations in exploring Elemental City, a place predominantly suited for water, earth, and air elements. Despite her initial fears and challenges, Ember finds courage and determination with the help of her friend Wade, ultimately overcoming obstacles and expanding her horizons.
These animated stories beautifully illustrate the significance of friendship and mutual respect in overcoming adversity and striving towards a utopian society where individuals support and uplift each other regardless of differences.
While fully idealistic societies may not exist in reality, I firmly believe that we have the capacity to strive towards creating such societies through our collective efforts, particularly by fostering respect and understanding among individuals.
