In this summer, I heard lots of warning alerts of jellyfishes that were found near the beach and in the sea. I wondered the reason of increasing the number of jellyfishes in ocean and people who were damaged by them. I realised it happened as the water was getting hotter because of climate change and that made large increase in planktons for them(기온 상승으로 인해 플랑크톤 수가 늘어남으로써 해파리 수도 급증했다).

- Idea Sketch 1

I drew some storyboards and idea sketches at first. I planned to create a short video with a story of increasing jellyfishes because of overfishing their enemies like turtle. But I thought it is not suit for the main idea of climate change, so I changed as be closer to the idea. And I guessed I need to draw more sketches for expressing the topic of climate change and jellyfish.

I drew more idea sketches to express climate change with the Earth and jellyfishes. I tried to show the face expression on the Earth looked like it has a serious problem(increasing temperature) as suffering from high fever. And jellyfishes were stuck to the planet to show the number of them were increasing because the water was getting hotter. I thought it could be intriguing work if I express the Earth like a character. And I thought creating them as mobile(hanging craft) could be interesting, but I thought I have to find better idea as drawing more one.

I would like to try to make jellyfish crafts with reusing materials like plastic bottles and bag. I believe plastic stuffs, while useful for humans, can be harmful to marine animals. For example, jellyfish, which are dangerous to humans, are actually a great food source for creatures like turtles. Also, I thought it could show recycling is one of solutions for preventing climate change as using recyclable ones. I tried to made jellyfishes with plastic bottle at first. I thought the bottom part was useful for expressing the head of jellyfishes more than the top part because it was easier to stick the oral arms inside of the bottom one. But I also worried that could mislead it as an octopus, so I thought I need to make more experiments using other materials.
- Inspiration

I found some new inspirations through taking a stroll and visit a museum. When I went to a gallery, I watched hanging crafts that was made with glass. Through these works, I thought it would become a great one if I made as a mobile when I finished to make plastic jellyfishes. And I also saw impressive works that were displayed in another gallery. When I watched these works, I figured out it has freewheeling lines with strings, so I would like to try to make the tentacles using plastic strings like fishing lines. And I thought I have to remember to use reusing products mainly for showing the importance of recycling and its various impacts on both humans and nature.

Before I tried to make tentacles with strings, I made some experiments using the body parts of plastic bottles with various shapes. I thought it looked more closer to the body parts of jellyfishes as I twisted them more than just use the the thin lines itself. But, I guessed I need to try various materials like plastic bags or fishing lines for making oral arms later.
- Making Process(Experiments)

I made jellyfishes with plastic bottles in earnest. I used the body parts as tentacles. I thought it was intriguing that it can change its shape as I would like to change by my hands even though it was little bit hard. I guessed I can correct sightly long one more than I use now or try to use other materials like plastic bags for making various oral arms with various size and shapes.

I continued to make some experiments for making jellyfishes using plastic bottles and some paper. I thought I need various sizes of bottles while I made it with small one, because I figured out it had limits for creating a lot of kinds of oral arms. Also, I tried to use some paper for expressing its arms and I thought it would be useful for making the shape of that part and I wanted to try with plastic bags. And I made the tentacles using glue, but I guessed fishing lines or other steads would be helpful because it was too weak and thin for work.

I tried to create the part of oral arms with plastic bag. Before I did, I guessed it would be useful for expressing that body as changing the figure easily. But, While I was making, I figured out it was also too weak to make the shapes. Then, I thought for finding other ways and I decided to cut the body of bottles like oral arms and stick it under the bottom. I realised that there was a easier way to create that part and I would like to try this one with other bottles. Also, I guessed it would be more similar to jellyfishes if I add fishing lines on that work. And I would like to find more methods for expressing oral arms while I made more experiments.

I made other plastic jellyfishes in different ways. I tried to work using plastic cup, and I guessed it was hard to cut and twist it and would be more similar to the jellyfishes if I cut it thinly. And I made another one with the top that I closed the lid and stuck the pieces that were shaped like wave. I realised it was hard to stick the oral arms under the part of head because it was melted easily because of heat from glue gun. But I thought it looked like jellyfishes and it was a good trial. I needed to cut the lines thinner and curved with different figures that be more similar to jellyfishes.

I continued to create new jellyfishes with plastic bottles. I realised that it was really intriguing that I can try to make them using other methods and lines. Also, I was excited to did some trials to create jellyfishes and found they were great ways for making them. I guessed plastic bottles were better to produce the crafts than plastic cups, so I would like to keep try to do with other one that has different shapes.

I made other jellyfishes with new bottles and fishing lines. I realised that fishing lines were really helpful for expressing the tentacles and I guessed it would be more similar to a jellyfish if I add a part of oral arms. While I was using a new bottle with different texture, it was quite hard to cut it, because it was tough. But, I thought it was a great trial for creating a jellyfish that has a new style from others. Also, I was excited that I could mixed different kinds of things with different texture or shapes. I expected that I could make unique one as I used other bottles or combined them.

I experimented to stick the fishing lines for tentacles on the jellyfishes. I was worried that the lines could not show surely because it was transparent like other plastic bottles. So, I decided to put on some jellyfishes that looked fragile and useless. I thought it would be better if I used paper or plastic bags for expressing oral arms than using bottles because they has different texture and colour and that would be helpful for showing the tentacles. And I guessed I can express that part as I cut them(bottles) slightly.

I continued to make new jellyfishes with plastic bottles and fishing lines. When I fished to work, I figured out most of them has similar size, then I thought I need to add a little change on my works. I decided to try to use the lids for creating smaller ones. And I guess it would be a nice trial for creating new jellyfishes. Also, I guessed I could make the outcome as I take pictures them on blue coloured paper for expressing inside of the sea.

I created small jellyfishes using lids. I thought it was a good trial because I could make them smaller with new materials. I guessed they would not be useful at first because I believed I could make just plastic stuffs. However, I figured out that plastic bags were too weak to stick on and hardly noticeable. Then I tried to use the lids and I found they were useful to make smaller one. I realised that there was no useless materials for my work as I tried to use one that I guessed it was not useful.

I made additional jellyfishes and a round sculpture that will be used for the Earth. I realised I need a craft that expressed our planet because I would like to show about one of the environmental problems that was happened on the planet. So, I decided to produce the Earth using the lids of takeout cups. But, it does not look like a complete circle, and I have to find a round stuff for expressing our planet.

- Making process

I tried hanging my jellyfish crafts using fishing lines, but I found it difficult to make holes in them using just sharp tools like scissors or an awl. Then I realised that heating the awl would make the process much easier. I also thought it would look nice if I hung them uniformly along the line. However, it turned out to be challenging to arrange them neatly all at once because the spacing became uneven, which disrupted the overall look. Initially, I planned to use a rounded shape for the main body, but the stick broke when I tried to bend it into a circle. So, I decided to experiment with a new shape and also create another hanging craft and Earth one.

I made one more craft for hanging and the Earth. I just planned for three ones but I guessed it would be helpful to make my work more colourful and plentiful if I add one more. And I thought I needed to try to change the colours to make some diversity in each lines. Also, I guessed the Earth craft would help to express the theme of my mobile that was climate change and jellyfishes.

I painted the Earth and used a glue gun to create sweat drops to express climate change. I realised that painting a three-dimensional planet was really difficult because most references don’t show the entire globe at once. Eventually, I found it easier to refer to a world map while working on the Earth. It made me appreciate how vast and complex our world is. I also thought that using a glue gun to create sweat drops was a good idea because the heated glue becomes liquid, resembling sweat when it melts. However, I discovered it wasn’t easy to work with, as the glue often stuck to paper or other surfaces and didn’t turn out as neat as I wanted. Despite this, I still plan to use this technique to create more sweat figures.

I figured out that some land on the Earth was on wrong position. Then I continued to paint it again. I thought it was really hard while I recreate our planet relied on a flat world map. I guessed this process was the most difficult part. After I completed to pain the Earth, I tried to hang all crafts under the main body. I thought its line was too long, and it was hard to manage this work because of line. So I guessed it would be easier to handle it after I change it shorter. Also, I thought it would be better to look at than long one.
