I watched a video called Good Copy Bad Copy, a documentary about the complex issues surrounding copyright. It showed examples of reproducing works in both good and bad ways, showing how sampling music can be a legal method of using copyrighted material. However, even when new songs are produced through sampling, it can still be controversial and incomeless. I really wondered why they were not accepted as creative works. The documentary also showed a scene of movie downloading in a developing country as an example of illegal use. Although they lack the infrastructure and skills for making movies, they became one of the first countries to create videos independently. From my perspective, we need to use copyrighted works legally as creative references when producing new work. As the saying goes, ‘Copyright is not just about stopping people from using your work, but ensuring they use it legally and compensating you for what they do with it.’ Just as artists have been inspired by the work of others when creating their own, aspiring artists deserve the opportunity to practice with a wide range of original material. I also believe museums and galleries should offer free entry for everyone, giving people the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by various works, fostering new creativity for future creations.
